Special Educational Needs
Special Educational Needs is a term which covers a range of situations. It may include the more able pupil, children with either specific or general learning difficulties, pupils with a physical disability and pupils with emotional, social and behavioural difficulties or sensory impairment.
In the first instance, it is the responsibility of each class teacher to meet the needs of the pupils in their classes and parents who have concerns should make this their first point of contact. Children who are identified as having special needs are placed on our special needs register, which consists of a number of levels of support.
Group and individual work, carefully matched to the children’s needs, is provided by the teacher. This can take place within or outside the classroom, often with the help of a Teaching Assistant. If difficulties persist, an Individual Education Plan may be drawn up and advice obtained from an Educational Psychologist or other professional.
Parents are kept informed and their views sought at each stage of the process.
The Special Needs Co-ordinator in School is Mrs Bernice Kurze, who is supported by Mrs Margaret Eden (Teaching Assistant). There is also a Special Needs Governor with specific responsibility for SEN.
Complete copies of the school’s Special Educational Needs Policy are available on request, or are on the school website.
